Production of hot dip galvanized fasteners per ASTM A153 / ASTM a153m

ASTM A153 / a153m-09 Standard Specification for zinc coating (hot dip) on steel hardware

This specification covers the standard for zinc coatings applied to iron and steel hardware by the hot drop process. The hot dip galvanizing process shall form a Zn / Fe alloy layer attached to the steel surface. This specification is applicable to class A, B, C and D steel hardware products. The thickness or weight / mass of the zinc coating shall be as specified for each material class. Coated products shall be free from coating areas, bubbles, flux deposits, tin slag inclusions and other defects. The coating shall be smooth and uniform in thickness. Tests shall be carried out to determine the minimum coating weight or thickness, surface and appearance, brittleness, adhesion, average coating weight / mass and average coating thickness. Guidelines for inspection, rejection and retesting, packaging and certification procedures are also given.

1. scope

1.1 this specification covers zinc coatings applied to steel hardware by the hot dip process. The hot-dip galvanizing process includes immersing the parts in the molten zinc for a long enough time, so that a metallurgical reaction occurs between the iron and molten zinc on the steel surface, thus forming a Zn / Fe alloy layer that combines the coating with the steel. Surface.

1.2 the purpose of this specification is to apply to hardware items that have been centrifuged or otherwise treated to remove excess zinc bath metal (free zinc). This is reflected in the coating thickness class requirements.

1.3 this specification applies to orders in inch pound units (e.g. a 153) or SI units (e.g. a 153m). Inch pound units and SI units are not necessarily exactly equivalent. SI units are shown in brackets within the text of this specification and where appropriate. Each system should be used independently, without combining values in any way. In the case of an international system of units order, all tests and inspections shall be carried out using the metric standard of the corresponding test or inspection method. For orders placed in SI units, the Galvanizer shall be informed at the time of placing the order.

1.4 this standard is not intended to address all safety issues related to use. It is the responsibility of users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
